beyond the human story

one week of cinema and film-related experience in the icelandic westfjords. on the threshold of documentary and fiction we will explore fear, love and death together.

we believe in narration transgressing existing category guidelines to tell a deeper truth about life. this magic core of cinema will be revealed in the city of hólmavík.

in the whole preparation and festival period there will be a permanent arts center in the city open all time during these three months – producing creative energy with an artist in residence program, movie screenings, concerts, exhibitions and workshops. the festival will be open and free for everyone!

Hólmavík is the largest fishing village on the Strandir coastline in the Icelandic Westfjords. It has a population of 506 people, a municipal service centre for the surrounding neighbourhood, a good harbour and actually one of the most modern shrimp factories in the world. While the Inhabitants in the countryside surrounding Hólmavík live mostly on sheep farming the main industry is based on small fishing vessels that take a brave battle against the increased capitalism in the globalised fishing industry.
The village provides you with a Tourist Centre, a small airport, a swimming pool, camping grounds, restaurants, guesthouses, shops, golf course and a horse rental just outside the village – and last but not least a seal habitat within easy walking distance.

Besides the basic facts the Strandir area has an exciting and tragic history of witchcraft, witch-hunting and sorcery shown in the local Museum of Sorcery & Witchcraft. The very cultural life in Holmavík offers choirs, a drama society, the Geislinn and HSS sports society, a community centre for young people – to name but a few. And that’s pretty much it.

screeningtour

A part of our team is on screening tour to sow the seeds of our festival. The movies are chosen with the necessecary perfidious mindset. And indeed, everything is going according to plan: Images become flesh, ember, honey, – melt down our walls, leading us back into the garden we hardly remember. So beware the ides of july, Húsavík, Akureyri, Hjalteyri, ísafjörður, Reykjavík, Reykholt!
